I have changed the lettering system - still trying different fonts.

Little tip on the lettering: try keeping the top and bottom lines short; maybe even as short as just one or two words. The longest line should usually be in the middle. Do those two things and the text will look as if it fits the balloons better.

Not a big deal, but you might want to give it a try and see what you think.

That makes sense, I guess. I think my problem with lettering is probably because I had a really mean Typography teacher when I studied Graphic design. Is it just me, but designers that get a kick out of fonts seem to me like the
equivalent of math geeks- pedantic and exacting? I really need to get this figured out since I have written some big chunks of dialogue.

The trick with big chunks of dialogue is to break them down into small chunks and put the pieces into two or three adjoining balloons.

That way, the reader isn't confronted with an off-putting "wall of text" and it will be much easier for you to control the "shape" of the text inside each balloon.

And, yes, you're right. Some people obsess about fonts far too much! It's important to get one that fits the mood of the comic (and is legible!), I think, but - beyond that - it really comes down to a matter of taste. It amazes me how many people get worked up about Comic Sans. I mean, if you don't like it, don't use it, but the amount of hostility towards it is bizarre. It's just a font, people. Get some perspective!
